What is Cardinal Elementary all about?

Cardinal Elementary School, 5415 Highway #16, Eldon, Iowa 52554

Cardinal Elementary is part of the Cardinal Community School District which is a 1 to 1 Apple Technology School. We educate grades PK-5 serving about 270 students. Our building offers central air conditioning in all classrooms. We have a well educated and experienced staff who work hard to offer our students their best. Our teachers utilize Accelerated Reader, Star Reader, Star Reader Early Literacy, and NWEA MAP testing. The data these programs provide is used to customize learning to best fit the needs of all students. We offer a positive behavior program and our school has very low incidences of non-compliant behaviors. The students are a very special group who truly care for each other.

Our preschool is operated in partnership with SIEDA Head Start and offers comprehensive family programming. Creative Curriculum is used for instruction. Free bus transportation is offered through our regular bus schedule. Three year old students are eligible to attend preschool if they turn three by September 15th. All fine arts and physical education classes are offered to our preschool students. Before and after school daycare is available from 6:00 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Current preschool and daycare rates are $2.00 per hour. Preschool and daycare scholarships are obtainable to those who meet income guidelines.

We have a spacious campus which offers wonderful scenery and plenty of room to play or explore. The elementary has an outside classroom area complete with tree plantings, butterfly garden, shelter house, and picnic tables. There is a nurse on staff as well as a librarian and guidance counselor. Students are offered the best experiences in fine arts at all grade levels. Our art and music teachers are very talented and those gifts show in our students. Our experienced physical education teacher is also the district activity director and offers our students balanced physical and skill based training to keep them fit and healthy. We are accepting new students and welcome you to apply. Better yet, come for a visit and see what we are all about. Call Christina today at 641-652-3591 to arrange to come and visit our school. Deadline for open enrollment requests is March 15th each school year.

Hopefully, you are all enjoying your new laptop.  My first entry to this blog will begin with classroom management.  I recently joined a book study group who are informally researching the book Conscious Classroom Management.  I want to thank all who came to the first meeting.  It is not always easy to share, but you all did a fine job.  Key points were made by the group that teachers must have high expectations for students in their classroom concerning behavior.  In addition, a couple mentioned connecting with the students to let them know you care about them.  We did not mention expectations for achievement.  Do you think this just follows good classroom management or is it also a conscious effort?  We really did not have time to address the academic side of classroom management.  However, I once read that 70% percent of all classroom discipline problems were related to educational programming.  Do you agree?  Hopefully, we can share our viewpoints on this site.  I invite you to share your thoughts.

School Finance: Many have attended informational meetings concerning school finances at Cardinal. What are you bringing from those meetings? Are you developing ideas? Obviously, it might be necessary to reduce staff. What ways do you think we could save money with the least impact on students?

We are researching Jolly Phonics. Please go to their webstie and check this out. Post your observations and ideas. Some will be traveling to Mount Pleasant later to see this program in action. Please take a look.

I am trying this to see how it works. I am very excited about the mac books and all of the possibilities that it brings for the students here at Cardinal.

Just wanted to see how easy this thing really is.

I too am excited to be using these in the classroom. Can't wait for ALL the students to have this POWER in their hands.

I hope everyone loves these computers like I do. I think they are great! I have already used mine for social skills with two of my students. Do we know when we can print at the school?

I want to know where to go to learn how to set up a web page for my classroom.

I know there are a lot of choices. Which one is the best?

Lots of Computers Please! 3 years ago

I have been thinking about all of the things I could do if I had computers in my room. Technology is great!

Hello to everyone! We are practicing hubbing. Nice to be in touch!

I would like to have more training on web page set up as well as blogging. Does anyone else feel that way?

Yesterday I went to ELL training at the MIU college in Fairfield. It was quite an experience. We were to pretend we were ELL students at 4 different levels of language acquisition. It would be terribly difficult to to be at a level where you can only recognize a few words in a sentence as well as not being able to communicate with your own teacher or peers.

I am interested in using this technology to assist with our upcoming Invent Iowa project. Does anyone have any ideas on how to incorporate these programs into the brainstorming, development, and presentation aspects of this project?

When will printers be installed on our computers?

priscillagiltner 3 years ago

The MacBooks are a wonderful asset to Cardinal Schools. As a teacher I feel strongly that the elementary needs to be trained both days next week. Is there anyway we can be trained both days?? I do not want to wait until January. Please find a way!

Mrs. Swope 3 years ago

I have a stuffed armadillo in my van if anyone would like to share it with their class, just be careful with it, it's my sister's. Yes this is true!

kphillipsCardinal Hub Author 3 years ago

Mrs. Swope:

I don't know if I can think of anything to do with a stuffed armadillo. I wonder what he ate to get so stuffed?

No, Mrs. Johnson, there is not one person who feels as lost as you!!! KLP

Mrs. Giltner:

I have some ideas on learning more about our computers. Let's have someone train the rest of us from each training. I will look at the list and see who would probably get the most from the training. They can train the rest of us. It will not be perfect but better than nothing.

I agree with Priscilla. I want to go to both days of training.

Sarah Eakins:

I am happy that you found the ELL training so rewarding. It is great that you got to walk in the shoes of another. I am proud of you for understanding how important this was to experience.

To All:

The above is simply a wonderful site that is full of interesting information and training podcasts. It takes a great deal of time to explore, but you will not be disappointed. It has links to podcasts about video conferencing and other training. Do not be scared off by the unusual titles. They are great. Enjoy and share with others.

Priscilla Giltner will soon be posting guidelines for Mentor/Mentees who will join our book study program.

pgiltner 3 years ago

First year mentors and mentees who are required to read the Conscious Classroom will be participating in a book study program. We will be posting comments on the "hub" after your assignments. After you have read chapter one please post a comment about what you learned about this chapter. When we meet in December as a group I will answer any of your questions. Also, you could post a comment if you have any questions.

Do you think we could wear jeans on our two PD days?

kphillipsCardinal Hub Author 3 years ago

Brian from 5C, I really think it would be okay to wear jeans on the 25th and 26th. Some like to dress up for our meal, but I suppose it is a personal choice.

Further homework for mentor/mentees. Before you start the book study program please post answers to the following questions:

1. What is classroom management?

2. What would you see going on in a classroom where good classroom managment is being practiced?

3. What do planning and content knowledge have to do with classroom management?

4.Besides general basics, does classroom management have to be the same in all classes? Why?

kphillipsCardinal Hub Author 3 years ago

We are now blogging, I think! Kirk told me that you might have trouble logging back on if you log out with your new Mac. However, it went fine for me, so I am not sure what he meant. Actually, he might have just been warning that it could take more time, which is correct in my case. It was kind of cold today, don't you think? They say it will be warmer Sunday. Take care.

Jennifer Burton 3 years ago

1. Classroom management is the ability for a teacher to have built a relationship and foundation with the students. The teacher starts this at the beginning of the year by establishing rules and consequences. The teacher then implements this plan and follows through with it.

2. I would not easily see classroom management happening in a room where it is done properly. It should be so smooth and easy, that a person doesn't even notice it at first.

3. A teacher must be an effective planner and they must know the content in order to be successful. If the teacher is unsure, the students will know and then the management aspect will fall apart.

4. No. Classroom management doesn't have to be exactly the same in all rooms. Teachers will have different styles and methods that work for them, but may not work for others.
